Iraqi police have released an Iranian photojournalist who was detained in the Shi'ite holy city of Najaf last week. Hassan Qaedi of the Fars news agency was in Najaf covering the stand-off between militiamen loyal to radical Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr and U.S.-backed Iraqi forces when he was arrested.
Iraqi police said he did not have the proper work permit, a charge his news agency denies. Mr. Qaedi is to be handed over to Iran's embassy in Baghdad.
Iraqi police detained four other journalists working for an Iranian news agency (IRNA) last month. They have since been released. But an Iranian diplomat who was kidnapped by militants nearly one month ago remains missing.
